Teachings on Tawheed, the Sunnah, and seeking knowledge

A small collection of teachings from the scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah, gathered here for the benefit of the community. Rendered in English for accessibility — refer to the original Arabic works for precise wording.

Tawheed

۞

Tawheed is only realized by joining two things together: denying worship to anything besides Allah, and affirming it for Allah alone. Negation without affirmation is not enough, and affirmation without negation is not enough.

— Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-'Uthaymeen, on the meaning of Tawheed

۞

Tawheed is the greatest principle in the religion and the foundation everything else is built upon — it is what the callers to guidance should give their attention to before anything else.

— Shaykh 'Abdul-'Azeez ibn Baz, on the standing of Tawheed

۞

The knowledge of Tawheed is the noblest of the sciences, because its subject is Allah Himself — His names, His attributes, and what is owed to Him by His servants.

— Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-'Uthaymeen

The Sunnah

۞

Holding fast to the Sunnah in times when few people practice it is one of the greatest deeds — the one who clings to it when others let it go is following the path of the earliest, best generations.

— a well-known principle of the Salafi scholars, drawn from the hadith of steadfastness in times of corruption

۞

Every innovation introduced into the religion, however small it appears, pulls a person a step further from the guidance the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions were upon — there is no safety except in following, not inventing.

— Shaykh Muhammad Naasir-ud-Deen al-Albani, on the danger of innovation in worship

۞

Correcting the outward acts of worship according to the Sunnah is inseparable from correcting the belief — the two were never treated as separate matters by the early generations.

— Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan

Seeking knowledge

۞

Seeking sacred knowledge is among the greatest means of drawing near to Allah — every Muslim, man or woman, should be diligent in understanding the religion and pursue it by whatever lawful means are available to them.

— Shaykh 'Abdul-'Azeez ibn Baz, advice to students of knowledge

۞

The best years to seek knowledge are the years of youth and energy — and no one who begins late should despair, for what is missed can still be made up through steady effort.

— a principle affirmed by Shaykh 'Abdul-'Azeez ibn Baz, citing the early scholars

۞

Knowledge is not simply what is memorized — it is what is acted upon. A student of knowledge should let every lesson change how they worship and how they deal with people, not only what they can recite.

— Shaykh Rabee' ibn Haadi al-Madkhali, on the purpose of seeking knowledge

۞

Sit with the scholars and the students of knowledge, carry a means to write down what you hear, and let nothing you benefit from be lost for want of recording it.

— counsel repeated often by Shaykh Muhsin al-'Abbaad and Shaykh 'Abdur-Razzaq al-Badr in their gatherings
